At Able Assist Dogs UK, Consett, our dogs are bred, carefully hand-reared and professionally trained to assist adults and children with autism.
We've been breeding dogs for more than 35 years
It's our job to ensure the pups we breed have the right temperament and inherent characteristics to become great assistance dogs in adult life. For that reason, we take our breeding scheme very seriously. Our dogs are all cared for to the very highest of welfare and breeding standards.
Our brood bitches are regularly assessed throughout puppyhood, allowing us to establish whether or not they have the required character, ability, sociable nature and confidence in various environments to make good assistance dogs. This is especially important, as they will be passing these positive qualities on to their offspring.
Our bitches and sires are all fully health tested in accordance with the recognised standards.
We specialise in the breeding of Labradors and Cocker Spaniels
Labradors
Labradors are sociable and good-natured, with a natural motivation to retrieve and hold objects, making them ideal for anyone who needs help picking things up around the home. Labradors enjoy being in the company of their trainer, and will do just about anything for a treat, making them a convenient dog to train.
Cocker Spaniels
Cocker Spaniels make excellent assistance dogs.
- They respond well to training and to their handlers
- Their soft mouths mean they can retrieve items without damaging them
- They are the ideal size - being easy to spot without being too large
- As a breed, they are familiar to and trusted by the public
